What is a forum? [New Covenant Workshops]
Requested and Answered by Ron B on 05-Feb-2005 12:33 (1210 reads)
What is a forum?
Its a Latin word for the market place. In Roman cities all the roads led to the market place which was usually a large open area where people could just gather together to talk or socialize. Around the perimeter were the shops. Official announcements were made in the Forum, and strange wandering preachers would sometimes pass through!

The atmosphere of a forum was one of open-ness. There is an old saying of church pulpits that 'the preacher stood six feet above contradiction'; this was not so in the Forum. It was a place for discussion and dialogue, certainly not monologues.!

Some folks would visit the Forum daily, others just from time to time, but if you wanted to know what was happening or wanted to let others know what you had heard was happening, the Forum was the place.

An electronic 'forum' has some of the same qualities ...and none of the smells!
