Got the book. Read through the first couple of chapters.

Will wait for Preach or Robert to reduce it to some dialect of American Hillbilly.

Re: The Narnia Code
I have read a little Polkinghorne. When someone tries to illustrate something complicated by a allusion to quantum theory and oscillating super-strings you know you are in trouble!

I think they were saying that the scientific description of life is not the only one and Lewis having specialized in Medieval English when they saw things as a whole not divided into parts. This mindset was one that Lewis could appreciate.

The comment that even though the Medieval astronomers were wrong they were more right in the wholeness of their view comes from that mindset. The reference to the description of the star was part of this.. even you know that a star is more than its physical and scientific definition.

I agree with what Polkinghorne and Lewis are saying, thre is more to reality, even physical reality, than a scientific description.

I wonder if to be consistent they will now allow Intelligent Design Advocates to influence programming on Darwinian Evolution?

Re: The Narnia Code
Hi Ron

Thanks for reminding us about 'The Narnia Code'. My wife and I watched it last evening and very much enjoyed it. I'm wondering what you made of the conclusions?

The 'discovery' that the Narnia novels correspond to the 7 medieval planets seems convincing and very interesting, but I am more interested in the relevance of this. I was most interested in the discussion at the end of the program, which included thought provoking comments from John Polkinghorne, but I'm not sure I really got hold of what the presenters were trying to say. I think they wanted to emphasise that Lewis saw God as being behind an exquisitely designed universe and, more importantly, that people and things are more than the materials that they are made of.

Were you provoked by that discussion or did you feel it didn't really go anywhere?

David

Re: The Narnia Code
I watched it on YouTube, certainly worth watching, I was expecting a hidden code like the Bible code but this is much more sensible.

To know if you want to watch it the basic premise comes from Michael Ward who has written a book called Planet Narnia. Michael states that C.S. Lewis, although keeping it a secret, used, one by one, the seven planets of medieval astronomy/astrology as artistic themes for the seven Narnian books-basically one planet per book:

* Jupiter: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
* Mars: Prince Caspian
* Sol: The Voyage of the “Dawn Treader“
* Luna: The Silver Chair
* Mercury: The Horse and his Boy
* Venus: The Magician’s Nephew
* Saturn: The Last Battle

The documentary also gives a good, if not short, biography of Lewis' life.

Re: The Narnia Code
This was the BBC on a good day. Usually the media is pretty hostile to Christianity. Modern soap operas invariably portray Christians as cranks.
