Re: 1. what is a church? Hmmm this has changed from 'what is a church' to after reading the following blogs 2 thru 4 i'm now asking 'what is Church' Looking at the church of Israel is very helpful. i do like the phrase 'covenant community' its got depth to it and asks us to dig more.
i know Im jumping ahead but I ask now, is Christ's call to the NT covenant community a call to regain what was established in the old. anyway just thinking out loud.

I would to get a general idea of the used of the word 'church' before we drill down to examine 'the church' and 'a church'. The ancient church of Israel never had churches, although the synagogues got close. I don't think of the New Covenant regaining what was established int the Old; I think they are quite separate... more later.

Re: 5. you are invited to a wedding Hi Ron,
I'm enjoying reading your blog on the Church. I had not thought about the Sinai covenant as a marriage before, but now you have explained it, it is clear and seems obvious in the light of 1. It being a covenant and 2. Israel called the 'wife' of Jehovah in a number of paasages. So Israel is called the 'wife' of Jehovah and is married to Jehovah at Sinai, but the New Covenant church is said to be the 'bride' of Christ and yet to be married. Do you think this distinction is significant? The church is described as being betrothed to Christ (Eph 1:14; 2 Corinthians 11:2) and is awaiting His return for the marriage (Matt 25:1). The marriage of the lamb is described as future in Revelation 19:7.

Re: 5. you are invited to a wedding I am trying to avoid all eschatological implications at this stage. Not because they are not important but because I really want to focus in on the purpose of 'church' and the impact of that concept on how we 'do church'. (I hate the phrase!)
I think the real purpose of 'church' has become so buried beneath our burdens for this and the other that I really want to get back to basics. If we can't get the foundation right the building will always be out of alignment with the purposes of God in his church/churches.

That's OK. I was not really pushing to go down that route, but the thought just struck me when I was reading your blog. I wonder if it is significant though in our 'now' relationship to God, rather than looking at the eschatology? You can leave this though if you think it diverts of the main topic (just how my mind works!).
