Covenant of redemption?
I realize Kevin might be the only one here who subscribes to the Westminster Standards (I certainly don't), but I like the idea of a catechism for children, so I'm looking at modifying the Westminster childrens catechism for home use.

I'm looking for thoughts/comments on these questions:

Q. 43. With whom did God the Father make the covenant of grace?
A. With Christ, his eternal Son.

Q. 44. Whom did Christ represent in the covenant of grace?
A. His elect people.

Q. 45. What did Christ undertake in the covenant of grace?
A. To keep the whole law for his people, and to suffer the punishment due to their sins.

Re: Covenant of redemption?
Q43 - Wonderful, I agree wholeheartedly with this. Humbled that others had realised it 350 years ago.
Q44 - I am not sure that He represented anyone. He was the way. The way was baptism into His death, raised to newness of life and becoming part of His body (in Him). He did it, we can share in it as the hymn says:
"So Thou has given Thy death to me,
With all its sting removed."
The answer smacks of Calvinism.
Q45 - I think Christ kept the whole law, which enabled Him to nail it to the cross and take it out of the way. If for anyone, it was for the people of Israel. Again, yes He suffer the punishment due to our sins, but I think a lot more too. He shared in our death, so He could share His life with us.

I noitce these things are not in the Shorter Catechism, and the longer one is too long to study tonight

Kind regards
Mike

Re: Covenant of redemption?
Mike, this is from the long version of the "children's catechism". There are several forms of this. It was not written by the Westminster Divines (sic), but was a later modification of the Larger and Shorter Catechisms.
